Sacramento Brights
Coordinators | Sacramento BrightsJust getting started here, we have about 27 members. We are lucky enough to be based near the co-founders of the Brights, so we get to see them and talk to them once in a while. My first goal is to make the local group as large as possible. To do this, I will have to convince the members to show up and to bring any interested friends. So, I have to make it fun and interesting for everyone (but I am a pretty boring guy, so I will have to enable others). My goal for the entire group is to reach out to the entire world and assist other BLCs in organizing, by telling them about sites like this. As BLC Coordinator, it is my job to locate all Bright groups, and to assist brights in finding groups in their area, so my group will be assisting me in this task. Hi Everybody! / Stephanie Buchwieser on 30 Mar 2007
My name is Stephanie, and I would like to establish a Brights Chapter here in Reno. I know you guys must be out there, and I think it is time we got together for inspiring conversations, emotional support and civil action. If you would like to get in touch with me ,post a blog and let me know you are out there.I have great plans and ideas!!!!! Growing the Brights / Bill Betz on 9 Feb 2007
The Brights are becoming a large group, individuals spread out all over the world. At this time (Feb.,2007) we number about 27,000. We started out as just a word, a meme to be be spread to counter the negativity of the term atheist, or Non-theist. We are not Non something, nor are we Anti something. We are just sensible people. I think that our organization can and should grow much larger. I would hope that even a number like 27 million is small for the number of sensible people in the world. I would like to see the organization grow, because there are a lot of good things that we can do, there is strength in numbers. People trying to raise their children need our support, for there are many traps set up by religions to indoctrinate children while they are still impressionable. We also need to have a voice in all democratic countries, so that policy is not decided by people with an apocolyptic viewpoint. These are things that can only be accomplished by showing that we are a large voting block. So I have taken on the job of BLC Coordinator. The main goal of this job is to find and track all Bright Local Constituencies. If you are not listed on the BLC page at the-Brights.net, we don't know about you. I feel that it is important to have BLC's, because that is real people meeting in the real world, shaking hands and maybe working together to do real things. So far, most Brights only know each other, if at all, over the internet. On the internet, you can easily talk a lot, but it is very difficult to actually get anything done. We recently created a calendar by committee on the Brights forum, and it was extremely difficult, yet we did accomplish it totally without meeting each other. So, let's make real things happen! There are Bright global forums at the-Brights.net, MySpace, Facebook, and places like Yahoo groups and Google Groups. There are BLC's forming here at CivilBrights, and at Meetup.com. MEETUP.COM-This is a great place to get started, but it costs a little money, $72 for six months. What most people don't realize is that you can have 3 meetups for this price. So you can do a Brights meetup for some other city, and pick an assistant to run the meetings there. So if you set up 3 groups on meetup and ask members to contribute a few bucks a year, it should be easy to pay for it. CivilBrights-You can post a time and a place for a meeting here, and people will know where to show up. Future- I am looking for ways to have the power and functionality of meetup, without the cost. We are a non-profit international corporation, and at some point we should have software that is similar to what you might find at other large corporations. Why not collaborative work spaces, video conference calling, translation services, etc. :) Bill
