Hi all,

Just wondering if there are any members in Ireland (Rep.) who are interested in forming a BLC. I'm trying at the moment to work towards many changes to the Irish Constitution to remove all the religious-specific atricles and references. I feel that this would be a very beneficial project to undertake as a BLC.

I keep seeing so much putting down of theists and religions. Where are the great philosophy sites, the best science sites, the sites about reason? Go forth and find those sites and leave a list of links as comments to this post.

We’re Brights and we want to find simple effective methods to change the world for the better. Because we’re spread out from Santa Monica to Alta Loma we held the first meeting of our nascent L.A. Bright group in a centrally located restaurant. We decided to start a letter writing campaign. We will notify each other when we see Super-influenced editorials, and write individual letters to the newspapers that publish them. We hope that the papers will sense a larger constituency of non-Super readers and print some of our comments.

Would you like to help? Please join us. We are eager to find new methods to influence our society in Bright ways. We want to meet regularly for fun and to brainstorm new ways to spread the Bright word. It is truly wonderful to be able to relax and talk with a group of Brights, knowing that there are no Supers in the group who will be offended by Bright conversation. Put yourself in the group. Hi, I may have already spoken to you or another member of your organization, but in case I haven’t, here is something that should interest you. The bottom line is that there are an overwhelming number of college-age atheists, agnostics, non-religious, humanists, skeptics, etc. who want to get together at an event which will be called AtheFest in the city of Chicago in July of 2008. These students who have expressed interest in the project come from all over the nation and even the UK (many of them are already members of different organizations from various schools around the nation and many more are only recently becoming aware of the CFI, SSA, etc. and are beginning to start their own student organizations at their respective schools). The project is only now beginning to come down from the realm of they hypothetical and being planned, so there is plenty of time to get on the ground floor of the planning process. We are currently in the phase of contacting different organizations such as the Humanist Chaplaincy of Harvard, the Secular Student Alliance, and other secular, humanist, and free thought organizations, so I felt that this would be the perfect time to invite your group to get in on the ground floor of planning. We expect there to be several hundred students at least attending AtheFest and so we can use all the help we can get. The vision of AtheFest is to give atheist, agnostic, nonreligious, and freethinking college students in general to have an opportunity to network and get to know others who are on the same page as they are. It also offers those of us who are only acquaintances through online forums and blogs or in other medias of debate and discussion an opportunity to put a face to our names and to build a much stronger and personal community, especially in those of us who are at the college level. The event will last for a full weekend (most likely Friday evening, all day Saturday, and Sunday afternoon), but an exact date has not yet been set in stone yet, as we are still accepting ideas from these various organizations, as well as from those who will be attending the event. There has been a great deal of planning already though, and here are some of the ideas which have been thrown around so far: - Bands, Live Music, and other forms of live entertainment - Speakers - Student Presentations - Student and Professor Discussion Panels - Booths for organizations to promote themselves - Workshops - Museum Visits - A dance or other major social event for people to get to know each other better and network - Open Mic for poetry, songs, etc. - Catered Dinner Discussions - Outdoor Barbeque - And more The event will also be promoted at the recently created SecularCovenant.com, on Facebook, and on MySpace, among other places. So I was able to get the attention of the editor's of my local newspaper by posting a BLC meeting time/date in the Church Announcement section  (http://archive.columbiatribune.com/2006/jun/20060604cale001.asp) of the Spiritual Life page ( http://civilbrights.net/node/268 ).  I'm posting this just in case I anyone else would like to try this approach to garnishing some attention. 

These postings are usually free, so it requires very little.

(I actually just had another interview published in the Faith section of this newspaper's competitor - I haven't been able to find an online copy yet, but hope to have it up here soon.)

Richard Dawkins is scheduled to appear on CNN this Monday (12) at 8:00 pm (7:00 central time).

He was actually supposed to be on yesterday, but CNN decided to bump one of the world's smartest men for the story of the death of one of the world's dumbest women; however, it turned out Steven Pinker was on The Colbert Report at the same time, so that made up for my disappointment.

I tried to be a member of American Atheists. But their style, which relies mostly on religion bashing instead of increasing awareness of non-theism perspectives, turned me off their whole organization.

As awareness of the Brights increases, I hope more people who were disappointed with AA, will appreciate its subtlety and acceptance of a variety of philosophical stances.

I clicked on the link for the local constituency in Wisconsin and the link sent me to the group in Wales (not Whales.) I couldn't find a "contact us" link here to report the problem so I'm commenting here. Also, there is no map marker for the group in Wales.

Sometime within the next 6 months the United States 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will hand out new decisions on whether 'under God' in the Pledge and 'In God We Trust' as the national motto violate the First Amendment. We anticipate a favorable decision. I will email this "E Pluribus Unum" petition to all Congresspeople shortly after the decision is announced. I will also print the petition and mail it to all Congresspeople if there are more than 500 signatures at that time.
